What is an AED, or Automated External Defibrillator?

An AED, or Automated External Defibrillator, is a portable medical device used to treat sudden cardiac arrest. AEDs are designed to analyze the heart’s rhythm and deliver an electric shock to restore normal heart rhythm if necessary.

AEDs are typically used by first responders, healthcare professionals, and trained bystanders to provide emergency treatment for cardiac arrest. They are commonly found in public places such as airports, schools, and sports facilities, and are often part of workplace safety programs.

To use an AED, the responder typically turns on the device and follows the instructions provided by the device. This typically involves attaching electrode pads to the chest of the patient and allowing the AED to analyze the patient’s heart rhythm. If a shock is required, the device will provide audible and visual instructions to the responder to deliver the shock.

AEDs are designed to be user-friendly and can be used by individuals with little or no medical training. However, it is important to receive proper training and certification in the use of AEDs to ensure safe and effective use in emergency situations. Additionally, AEDs should be properly maintained and periodically checked to ensure they are in good working order.
